Red Panda Diets

Hi,

We are currently updating our Red Panda Diets and I am interested to know what other Zoos are feeding. Our animals receive daily bamboo (2-3 sticks per animal), 100g leaf eater pellets (Speciality Feeds WA), a combination of apple, pear, grapes, banana/melon, sweet potato, corn, figs, avocado/mushrooms (when available), high protein powder (Wombarro feeds SA) and Predamax carnivore supplement (Vetafarm NSW). We are looking at reducing sweet fruits, has anyone had experience or issues with the pandas while taking off fruit. The pandas don't really like to eat the pellets, there appears to be lots of wastage and the pellets end up feeding the wild birds. Does any one feed mice or day old chicks? Any updated information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Chantal,

Our red pandas get Mazuri Leaf-Eater biscuits, dog chow, and fresh produce. The produce is 50% fruit (apples, pears, oranges) 50% vegetables (leafy greens, green vegetables, cooked carrot, and cooked sweet potato). Unfortunately bamboo does not grow well in our climate, so they get this as enrichment, but not as a staple food item.
The biscuits are their least favorite item.
We do not feed whole prey items (mice or chicks), though I am fairly certain they would eat this.

Cheers
MJ
